This is a subtitle for your new post

If you’re starting your day in the quiet beauty at the end of Reeds Mill Road in Madrid, Maine, you’re already surrounded by some of the most peaceful scenery in the state. But just a short drive away lies one of New England’s most breathtaking routes — the Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway — a loop that weaves past cascading waterfalls, sparkling lakes, and sweeping mountain overlooks.

Here’s how to make the most of a single day on this unforgettable drive.

Stop 1 – Smalls Falls

9:15 AM – 9:45 AM
From Reeds Mill, head north on Route 4 for about 15–20 minutes and you’ll hear it before you see it — the rushing water of
Smalls Falls. This tiered waterfall tumbles into deep pools surrounded by mossy rock. It’s an easy, quick walk from the parking area, with picnic tables if you brought your morning coffee along.

Insider tip: If you’re visiting in summer, this is a popular swimming hole. Arrive early for a quieter experience.

Stop 2 – Rangeley Lake State Park

10:00 AM – 10:45 AM
Continue north into
Rangeley Lake State Park, where the mountains meet the water in one perfect postcard view. The park offers a peaceful shoreline, easy walking trails, and plenty of spots to just sit and take it all in.

Whether you’re after photos or simply a deep breath of mountain air, this is Rangeley at its most serene.

Stop 3 – Height of Land

11:15 AM – 11:30 AM
Leaving the park, take Route 17 toward Roxbury and watch for signs for
Height of Land. This famous overlook is a “stop the car” kind of view — panoramic vistas over Mooselookmeguntic Lake, with layers of mountains stretching to the horizon.

Photo lovers: This is one of Maine’s most photographed spots for a reason.

Stop 4 – Quill Hill

11:50 AM – 12:30 PM
From Height of Land, make your way to
Quill Hill. A well-maintained dirt road leads to the summit (seasonal, small entry fee), where you’ll be treated to 360-degree views of the entire Rangeley region. On a clear day, you can see into New Hampshire’s White Mountains.

Bring a snack — it’s a perfect place to linger.

Stop 5 – Coos Canyon (Optional)

12:45 PM – 1:15 PM
If time allows, keep heading south to
Coos Canyon, a roadside gorge carved by the Swift River. You can scramble on the rocks, dip your feet in the water, or just enjoy the sight of rushing water cutting through polished stone.

If you’re hungry, you might want to skip this and head straight back toward Rangeley for lunch.

Stop 6 – Lunch in Rangeley

1:45 PM – 2:45 PM
Back in town, you’ll have plenty of options for a late lunch:

  • 45th Parallel Wood Fired Grille – wood-fired pizza and hearty sandwiches.
  • Pine Tree Frosty – classic Maine burgers and ice cream.
  • Parkside & Main – casual lakeside dining with a view.

After lunch, stroll Main Street, browse a few local shops, or wander down to Lakeside Park for one last look at Rangeley Lake.

Bonus Stops if You Have Time

  • Rangeley Outdoor Heritage Museum – celebrates the area’s sporting and fishing traditions.
  • Hunter Cove Wildlife Sanctuary – an easy trail for bird and wildlife watching.
  • Saddleback Mountain Access Road – drive up for another perspective on the surrounding peaks.

Loop Summary

This route gives you:

  • Scenic driving: ~3 hours total
  • Sightseeing & stops: ~3–4 hours
  • Total trip: 6–7 hours at a relaxed pace
